State Umpire in Chief
Hello USA Softball of Michigan Umpires,
Welcome to the USA Softball of Michigan Umpire program. Our program is rich in history, tradition and is considered one of the best in the country. We are glad you are thinking about being a part of this great program. If you are already an umpire coming back, thank you for making our program what it is today.
2020 turned into a nightmare for all us. However, we were, in part, able to get back on the field and allow for players to play and our umpires to work in various games. Our program was also able to offer tournament play and games were played, successfully. It was a challenging year but our umpire program came through in a big way.
For the 2021 season, there will be more opportunities compared to past years as we are scheduling more JO Qualifiers, Slow Pitch Qualifiers, and State Tournaments in Slow Pitch, Fast Pitch, and Modified. These will be great opportunities for our umpires to work and to get involved.
Accepting the challenge of getting us on the field in 2020 was our Executive Director, Darrin Duistermars, and Assistant Director, Debbie Sherwood. Without their dedication, passion, and hard work a lot of fields would have been sitting empty all year. Our program owes them a huge thank you for their efforts in having softball played in 2020.
This past year of 2020, even with the Covid-19 virus, the USA Softball of Michigan program had 53 Umpire assignments at the national level. Our umpires traveled to Maryland, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Oklahoma to represent Michigan for national tournament play.
In 2021, we will not be having physical state clinics due to concerns with the Covid-19 virus. This year we will be having virtual clinics that will be starting in February. These clinics will offer the same type of classroom options for live showings and will be recorded so you may watch at your convenience. We will still have the requirement that in order to attend a national tournament or be considered for an at-large state assignment, you will have to attend a USA Softball of Michigan State Clinic, USA Softball of Metro Detroit School, or a USA Softball National School. For this year, you must watch all sessions of our State Clinic virtual training. These sessions will be no more than two hours at a time. For more information, check out the USA Softball of Michigan website in the coming days. There will be no charge to attend these clinics except for the National Schools. For cost and other information, go to www.usasoftball.com
To register with our program, you must register individually through www.registerusa.com. If you have been registered since 2015 you were issued a username, password, and a permanent member ID. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Sherwood at (989) 835-5821 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Being an umpire is a thankless job, but it also can be a very rewarding profession. Whether you are a veteran umpire or just starting out, you are a very important part in being the ambassadors of the USA Softball of Michigan program across the local leagues, state, and country. Thank you for all you do.
If you need more information, please contact a District Umpire in Chief or a State Staff member.
I look forward to seeing you at the ball park this year,Bryan Smith USA Softball of Michigan, Umpire in Chief
